Abstract This paper describes the performance requirements, design, and fabrication of a LCD projection image source for use in a wide field of view head‐up display (HUD) optical system. The LCD projector replaces the commonly used CRT, with the intended benefits of lower cost, multicolor, improved raster brightness, and digital interface. Predicted and measured results are reported, with descriptions of the key technical challenges.
