New approach in FED technology based on edge emission from a thin carbon film is presented. Planar technology is employed to provide efficient electron emission and high brightness in the structure with the effective cathode‐to‐anode spacing of about 1 μm. Alpha‐numerical displays of different colors are demonstrated with the luminance up to 28,000 cd/m 2 at voltages around 300 V and phosphor luminous efficiency of ∼ 5–6 lm/W for blue‐green color.
