Plasma display panels (PDPs) suffer from the dynamic false contour which is the critical problem in obtaining higher picture quality. Subfield optimization technique is known to alleviate this artifact. In this paper, we propose two‐tone response as a new measure to evaluate and quantify the dynamic false contour of a subfield look‐up table (LUT). Then, we propose an effective subfield optimization technique, using the two‐tone response. Simulation results show that the dynamic false contour can be effectively reduced by the new subfield optimization algorithm based on the two‐tone response.
