Abstract The cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) with Ar and Xe gases was manufactured and the luminance characteristics were measured under various ambient Temperatures. The luminance of CCFL with Ar + 10% Xe showed higher luminance and luminous efficiency than that of CCFL with Ar gas only. The luminance and the luminous efficiency of CCFL with Ar + 10%Xe were approximately 40% and 8% higher than that with Ar gas only at ambient temperature of 50 °C. It was found that the luminance and luminous efficiency of CCFL can improve by addition of Xe gas.
