Each year the Society awards the Display of the Year Award to several leading edge devices or technologies that provide innovative solutions to an information display need. The following paper provides a summary of a 2001 Display of the Year Award recipient. The technology described has been developed to facilitate the design and manufacture of large‐area direct‐view active‐matrix‐liquid‐crystal‐displays (AMLCDs) that are tiled together without visible seams. A 37.5″ size, 1×3 tile array, 16×9 aspect ratio, 852×480 format (WVGA), seamlessly tiled color AMLCD has been designed and manufactured. The brightness, dark contrast, ambient contrast, and backlight lamp lifetime are 500 cd/m 2 , 500:1, 200:1, and 40,000 hrs, respectively. This product, Spectrum 3750, is being transitioned into volume manufacturing. Higher resolution 42″ WXGA and HDTV products and a smaller 32″ WVGA product are being designed. Rainbow offers the Spectrum 3750 product for OEM and direct sales starting during the second half of 2002.
