This paper describes the application of thin crystal film (TCF) e‐type polarizers to TN LCD configurations for two novel applications: an automotive display with LED backlight illumination and a welding goggle shutter. The modeling and optimization of these TN configurations reveal that excellent optical performance can be achieved for these two applications using TCF e‐type polarizers while capitalizing on the unique attributes of TCF materials for reducing device thickness and weight, reducing device cost and improving environmental robustness.
