The transmittive bistable twisted nematic liquid crystal display with non‐cross polarizers are compensated by half‐wave and/or integer‐wave retardation plates. The compensation is optimized through maximizing the contrast ratio. The optimized bistable twisted nematic liquid crystal displays with retardation compensation show great improvement in both contrast ratios (120:1) and bright state transmittance (33%).
