An energy efficient sinusoidal drive circuit has been developed for full‐color passive matrix electroluminescent (EL) displays using a tuned L‐C resonant power inverter with proper timing control and synchronization. The circuit enables efficient recovery of capacitive energy from the display panels to substantially reduce power consumption and enables increased luminance. The design also facilitates low EMI emission and is cost effective for large size (25∼50”) EL displays.
