We have developed low cost, low power SmartPaper 1 displays for retail sign applications. Novel ways of decomposing and encoding images have been developed to permit high‐resolution images to be embedded in printed circuit artwork. As a result, display controllers can be implemented with very simple micro controllers and comparatively few display element drivers. We present three types signs that all achieve high cost savings by reducing the number of image drivers to match the needs of different retail applications.
