A mercury‐free backlight in which Xe‐type small diameter CFLs are installed, has been developed. Backlight dimension is wide 7 inches and 10 mm in thickness. The luminance of this backlight is 6,000 cd/m 2 , light output stability time is wthin 1 second, and dimming capabililty is from 100% to 1% over the wide temperature range. Therefore, it is suitable for a car‐navigation display.
