A high luminance inorganic electroluminescent (iEL) blue phosphor, europium doped Mg x Ba 1−x Al 2 S 4 , has been developed on iFire substrates using dual source electron beam evaporation. The color performance is L 60 >200 cd/m 2 with CIE x, y‐coordinates 0.135 and 0.105, respectively, using a 120Hz bipolar pulsed square wave form. Partial substitution of magnesium for barium lowers the annealing temperature of BaAl 2 S 4 phosphor for crystallization, which is an important parameter for fabricating large size inorganic EL devices for such applications as large screen television.
