The progress of color thin‐film electroluminescent (TFEL) devices based on rare‐earth doped alkaline‐earth sulfide phosphors is reviewed, as a memorial to Prof. Shosaku Tanaka of Tottori University passed away on Sep. 15, 2003. In this paper, his main works, i.e., the basic characterization of rare‐earth doped alkaline‐earth sulfide EL phosphors, the development of white‐light emitting EL phosphor materials, and the full‐color TFEL displays using the combination of white EL and RGB color filters, are introduced.
