Abstract Using a scalable DCT‐based compression method of low hardware complexity we have reduced the size of the memory that is required for LCD overdrive. Compression ratios up to 16 do not lead to a noticeable loss of sharpness or artifacts. Due to the application of a novel technique this holds also for still images.
