We show that holographic retarders using form birefringence can be designed to allow accurate matching of the dispersion of a liquid crystal device. Significantly, it is shown that the dispersion properties of these retarders can be adjusted over a large wavelength range by varying the periodicity of the index of refraction profile. Both a twisted nematic (TN) liquid crystal display (LCD) and a vertically aligned (VA) LCD are compensated using different stacks of dispersion matched, holographic retarders. The results are compared with LCDs compensated by standard retarders. The new compensator designs are shown to have excellent qualities, and the potential to surpass previous designs.
