In practice there for more than 60 types of defects set of wheels that arise under the influence ofvarious factors , and from them , directly or indirectly dependent on traffic safety.Therefore, set of wheels, which exceed the established defects undergo repair or excluded from theinventory. The article describes the features of the mechanism of wear of the wheel thread, as well as tostudy the main sources of the wear particles.Results of the analysis of micro-cracks , peeling and wear particles , as well as the mechanisms oftheir formation showed that the wear of the wheel thread is a complex phenomenon that occurs by severalmechanisms (fatigue, adsorption, corrosion, wear by friction) and is a multifactorial process, and the changestate of the surface layer of the rim during operation reduces its quality characteristics.
