Resumo Este texto visa apresentar os resultados da pesquisa sobre o papel da biblioteca em comunidades, a partir de metodologias e vivências locais em municípios cearenses. Busca refletir sobre conceitos de bibliotecas comunitárias como espaços simbólicos de ações integradoras de saberes, sociabilidades e mediações informacionais e comunicacionais, ancorados em autores como Geertz (1989), Canclini (2003), Maffesoli (2003) e Morin (2000), entre outros. Apresenta considerações sobre a importância da inovação social como requisito fundamental à compreensão do valor da informação para o desenvolvimento local e o trabalho desenvolvido no projeto de extensão Ler para Crer: oficinas itinerantes para a implantação de bibliotecas comunitárias, realizado por professores e alunos do curso de Biblioteconomia da Universidade Federal do Ceará.Palavras-chave bibliotecas comunitárias; cultura e cidadania; cultura local; mediação informacional; dinâmicas sociaisAbstract This text aims to present the results of the research on the role of libraries in communities based on methods and experiences of local municipalities in Ceará. The research aims to reflect on the concepts of community libraries seen as symbolic spaces of actions that integrate knowledge, sociability and informational and communicational mediation. These concepts are grounded in authors like Geertz (1989), Canclini (2003), Maffesoli (2003) and Morin (2000). This work presents an analysis of the relevance of social innovations as a fundamental requirement to understand the value of information for local development. It also presents the work of the Project “Read to Believe”, composed of itinerant workshops for the implementation of community libraries, performed by teachers and students of Library Science at the Federal University of Ceará.Keywords community libraries; culture and citizenship; local culture; information mediation; social dynamics
