The article is devoted to the substantiation of the fact that the method of reconstruction can be used in the historical and legal sciences to solve a wide range of problems; however, it is not universal, and in this regard, it is important to correctly assess its capabilities. We consider the problems, the nature of which makes it impractical to use reconstruction in their solution, and the problems in which this method can be useful. The rules are formulated, following which makes it possible to most effectively use the possibilities of reconstruction in historical and legal research.
