This article presents an overview of concepts related to identity and language learning, as well as empirical research on student’s identity in SL, FL and AL classrooms published in recent years, focusing on the theoretical and methodological approaches that supported the studies. Besides a brief history of the concept of identity, it discusses the concept in light of postmodern theories. Moreover, the notions of investment and imagined communities, as proposed by Norton (2013, among others) are reviewed along with some empirical studies on identity and language learning. Finally, the paper presents suggestions for further research.
