Currently, the investigation of almost every criminal case includes measures to search for and remove electronic traces that contain important evidentiary information. However, methodological developments and legislation do not keep up with the rapidly developing practice. This creates a number of problems, including the lack of preparedness of law enforcement agencies to work with such traces, which significantly reduces the effectiveness of actions to investigate crimes. The article analyzes the main directions of using digital traces in investigative practice, as well as provides recommendations for the development of this field of knowledge.
