This article deals with one of the means of creating contrast – antonymy on the material of paroemias of the English and German languages. The authors have given a number of definitions revealing the essence of this notion. The English and German proverbs and sayings containing antonyms are distinguished and analyzed. The analysis made it possible to identify frequently occurring antonymic series in the paroemias of the English and German languages.
