The RAE and the ASALE published their Ortografía de la lengua española in 2010, where, among other orthographic rules, the use of punctuation marks is established. The orthographic competence for the use of these signs, particularly in the case of the comma, requires a complex linguistic (prosody, morphosyntax, semantics, discourse analysis, etc.) and extralinguistic know-ledge on the part of its users. In view of such complexity, this article seeks to conduct a critical review of the main functions of the comma and the criteria followed in the aforementioned work to establish the rules for comma usage.
