This article is devoted to the study of the role of Vitus Bering in the implementation of the geopolitical plans of Emperor Peter I. On the basis of research literature and historical sources, Bering’s biography, his entry into the Russian service, and participation in hostilities in the Baltic and Azov Seas are revealed. The motives of the choice of the commander of the First Kamchatka Expedition from two applicants: V. Bering and K. von Verden are analyzed in detail. The tasks set by Peter I to V. Bering, their connection with the general goals of Russian foreign policy of the first third of the 18th century, are clarified. Bering’s desire to always strive for the strict observance of the Tsar’s decrees, his honesty and disinterestedness were noted
