This paper deels with the landslides generated in SE Cantabria (northern Spain) by the torrential rains of August 1983. The characteristics and spatial distribution of these landslides cannot be understood without taking into account the type of habitat and land use in the region. These characteristics facilitate an understanding of the process of accelareted erosion much more than simple physical factors
