ABSTRACT: The two conflicts which opened and closed the 5th century BC proved the overwhelming superiority of the Greek heavy infantry against the formidable war machine of the Achaemenid dynasty. Regardless of the final outcome of these conflicts, probably the best trained, most highly specialised and fearless force of the whole Persian army was the cavalry. Drawing mainly on the limited literary resources available, we analyze the key characteristics of this force.
