Abstract: What is the meaning of writing in Benjamin’s motif of history as a redemption of the past? In the essay on Kafka (1934), the problem of the aesthetic character of the writing of history is associated with the issue of the value of truth (“doctrine”) of fiction. Between the two there starts to come out a dialectics between remembering and forgetting, in which writing transforms narrative into a kind of memory which, acting against itself, achieves the “sea of happy forgetting”.Keywords: Benjamin; Kafka; writing; doctrine; remembering; forgetting.
