When W. C. Rntgen handed the rays he had discovered "into the hands of doctors" at a historic meeting in Wrzburg in 1896, he had no idea what a revolution they would bring about in medicine and would now be extremely surprised that in such a relatively short period of time modern medical radiology covered four major departments: X-ray physics (rsp. technique), X-ray biology, X-ray diagnosis and X-ray therapy. This gift from Rntgen also served as a touchstone for physicians, since the practical application of X-rays in medicine required knowledge of electricity and electrical engineering. The radiologist had to have a clear understanding of topography and anatomy and be familiar with photography.
