Matzenauer, who has been working in this field for 25 years, summarizes our current knowledge on the subject in his review. First of all, it is emphasized that in syphilis, as in other infections (the), the disease is not transmitted by the germ cells (sperm or egg); syphilis is transmitted only by the placental route; therefore the term hereditary syphilis must be dropped and replaced by the term congenital.
