SAINT-MICHEL DE CUXA COMPOSICIÓN ARQUITECTÓNICA DE LA IGLESIA DEL SIGLO X. Saint-Michel de Cuxa. Architectural Composition of the X Century Church

A pesar de la cantidad de estudios sobre la abadía de Saint-Michel de Cuxa, nunca se había planteado el origen de la concepción arquitectónica de la iglesia consagrada en el siglo X. En este artículo se utiliza la arquitectura como material arqueológico para analizar los elementos claves de la composición arquitectónica del edificio: la geometría, la modulación y la proporción. A través de la articulación de estas herramientas se pone en evidencia la planificación de la iglesia de siete altares promovida por el abad Garí. Veremos un edificio que responde a un trazado geométrico,  a unos módulos dimensionales y, a unas proporciones consecuencia de un lenguaje simbólico concreto, reflejan y documentan, por tanto, unos saberes y el modo de aplicarlos.Despite of the great number of studies on the abbey “Saint-Michel de Cuxa” that was consecrated in the 10th century there is total luck of works on its architectonical conception. In this paper the architecture is employed to analyse the key compositional elements and the architectural planning of the building, such as the geometry, the modulation and the proportion. The planning of this church with seven altars that was promoted by abbot Gari is evidenced throughout the relation of these elements, as we are going to see, since it reflects a specific geometrical patterns, proportions and modules with a concrete dimension. This study reveals particular symbolic language and knowledge and a certain way to apply them.
