The article considers theoretical approaches to the study of open public spaces by foreign and domestic authors. The main focus is on public spaces in the structure of the citys transport and communication framework. The importance of such spaces for the organization of pedestrian traffic is emphasized. The definition and urban planning features of open public spaces are formulated. The factors that determine the need to improve methods of storing light vehicles in historical parts of cities in the immediate vicinity of pedestrian zones are considered. The examples of the most interesting from an architectural and technical point of view of projects of urban underground parking in recent years are given.
