The relevance of the article lies in the fact that in the prevention of mercenary crime, a new participant is included in social relations – a self-serving criminal. As has been repeatedly noted at various conferences, a number of practical and theoretical problems, which deserve close attention, arise in the field of cognition of social and psychophysiological traits, properties and qualities of such a person. The article attempts to answer the question why there exists a certain type of people who having revealed and developed their personal abilities, satisfied their personal needs, and reached the level of self-actualization, still do not strive for spiritual growth, but take actions aimed at committing mercenary crimes. For the first time the article raised questions about the development of the mechanism of self-serving behavior, and then outlined the targeted guidelines of the study to study the needs of the identity of a self-serving criminal, taking into account various views on the theory of self-actualization of such a person.
