Recently, a large number of studies about myofibroblasts have been published. These cellular elements were primarily described for over 40 years and their ultrastructural characteristics, as well as its role in various physiological and pathological conditions continue stirring interest in health area. This paper  aims to describe the cellular and molecular biology of myofibroblasts, and contextualize scientific findings of these cells recorded in articles over the past 40 years since its initial discovery.
