Upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) is a common condition in gastroenterology, but "Downhill Varices" (DHV) or varices of the upper oesophagus are an uncommon cause of UGIB, with different aetiology from lower third oesophageal varices and different therapeutic implications.
