A summary on systematics knowledge of Cactaceae in Mexico is presented. It provides a bibliographic revision of the development in systematics studies and its main areas of research, as monographic revisions, floristics, anatomical, palynological, embryological and biochemical, as well as the contributions made by Mexicans. Advances in those disciplines and in the new systematics methodologies show a clear and evident inter relationship to a better understanding about classification and phylogeny of Cactaceae. Finally, this paper points out some perspectives in relation to research collections, collaborations and personnel training.
