The net primary productivity (NPP) of a tropical rain forest in Los Tuxtlas, Veracruz, México, was determined sampling the litterfall in one ha of forest during a three year period. NPP was, for each of the three years 10.6, 13.2 and 16.2 t ha-1 year-1. These figures are lower than the mean values reported for these communities, however in the present study root productivity was not measured. Results are discussed in the light of soil resources availability and the influence of local climatic conditions.
