The known alpine moss flora of Nevado de Colima includes 34 species and varieties which can be grouped into five floristic elements according to their world distribution: Boreal, Meso-American, Southern, Widely Distributed and Endemic to Mexico. All species are already known from other alpine areas along the Neovolcanic Belt. The reduced number of taxa and the floristic differences with other areas probably are due to the small size of the alpine area, unstable substrates and a drier climatic regime. Tortula and Didymodon are absent from this alpine area.
