This study concerns Descartes’ views on the material world, based especially on two of his works, the Traité de la Lumière (a.k.a. Le Monde), and the Principia Philosophiæ. We present an overview of his vortex theory of matter, his laws and concept of motion, his rationalism in science, and his cosmology. We address and assess some popular interpretations and criticisms offered by the secondary literature. Instead of narrowing down the scope on any particular issue, the main goal of this study is to outline briefly an important aspect of Descartes’ work, which to our best knowledge has not been systematically summarized so far in the Hungarian secondary literature.
