Rembrandt’s painting challenged me personally in my youth. What we call “home” and “homecoming” forms our lives’ essential experience. All through my life and work, I have searched for that form of living and acting, by way of which I can help my neighbours find themselves, return home, have their “home” experience. Jesus articulates his parable in words, Rembrandt paints a picture. Jesus passes on a religious message by virtue of his parable. This religious message cannot be ignored otherwise we cannot comprehend what it is all about. Without this support, we cannot figure out this painting. In his painting, among other characters, Rembrandt actually tries and makes us discern and see the relationship of the three “central” figures, the changes that take peace in their hearts. The painting has a universal message and teaching. In our lives, we have to respond to three essential challenges: how do we relate to ourselves, to others and to the Infinite? In other words: how do you relate to “the Lord, your God”, to “yourself” and to “your neighbour,” who is like you, however, another self. “Home means safety, I have some tasks to do at home,” – writes a contemporary Hungarian author, Andera Tompa – “and one can observe the holiday at home.”
