Tourism geography as a scientific and educational discipline has gone through a number of stages in its development - from comprehensive study of tourist sites to the development of theory and methodology for the formation of tourist-recreational systems and their spatial structures. Corresponding departments were established at geography faculties of Russian universities. Some of them specialize exclusively within the geographical area of expertise, while others have incorporated some aspects of management science, in our case – in the service sector. Experience has shown that students prefer the latter specialization. The author believes that the reason for this phenomenon, being negative for geographical science, is ignoring the issues of marketing and management when giving lectures on tourism geography. This fact was clearly manifested in the article by S.A. Tarkhov. Polemizing with him, the author of the given response article substantiates his vision of the scientific and educational discipline for future specialists in the field of spatial development of tourism.
