After many years of teaching, the author, of necessity, enrolled in an equitation course—to learn how to care for his family's newly acquired horse—and was thereby reminded of some of the many psychological and academic challenges students face: establishing a personal level of comfort, facing performance anxiety, and formulating test‐preparation strategies. As a result of the experience, the author suggests that educators may work more effectively with their students when this sort of experience is fresh, and he encourages other teachers to put themselves into student roles to see what lessons and reminders they might gather.
