The ways teachers and students, particularly adolescents, come to know one another can be tricky terrain to navigate, particularly in the climate of increased measurement and evaluation. When young people's literacies inside institutional walls are confined to measurable outcomes, precious opportunities to better understand these youths' complex and multifaceted lives are lost. The author discusses the possibilities for teaching, learning, and knowing when classroom practices reflect that literacies are multimodal. This article has implications for literacy pedagogy across grade levels and contexts.
