Program Overview: Damage to cell membrane integrity is an important mediator of cell death in a variety of neurologic diseases. Tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) is a thrombolytic agent that can dissolve blood clots, which cause most heart attacks and strokes. Choline precursors promote the maintenance, repair, and de novo formation of cell membrane phospholipids and several neurotransmitters. A number of new neuroreparative agents are now available and pharmacists would benefit by learning the mechanisms of action, pharmacology, and toxicity of these novel agents, as well as the potential benefits for the treatment of stroke and other neurologic conditions.
