Sobre a Classificação das Palavras

Neste artigo discutimos algumas questões básicas relativas à classificação das palavras, a saber: o tipo de unidade a ser classificada (palavras, e não lexemas); a necessidade de estabelecer objetivos claros para a classificação; e a distinção estrita entre classes (baseadas em relações paradigmáticas) e funções (baseadas em relações sintagmáticas). A partir daí, discutimos a questão da distinção tradicionalmente aceita entre "adjetivos" e "substantivos", e mostramos que essa distinção não é de classe, mas de função. Ou seja, adjetivos e substantivos não se distinguem enquanto classes de palavras em português. In this article we discuss some basic questions relative to word classification, namely: the type of unit that should be classified (words, not lexemes); the need to set up clear objectives to classification; and the rigorous distinction between classes (based on paradigmatic relations) and functions (based on syntagmatic relations). We then consider the traditionally accepted distinction between "adjectives" and "nouns", and we show that this is not a class distinction, but rather a functional distinction. Thus, adjectives and nouns are not distinct word classes in Portuguese
