The article examines the features of the functioning of mass communication, the number of participants in which has significantly expanded in recent years. New realities demanded a revision of the previously established norms of regulation of mass communication. The currently existing ethical documents, which basically represent the standards of professional behaviour of a journalist, cannot act as a full-fledged ethical regulator for all participants in mass communication due to the multidirectional nature of their activities. The agenda for media researchers today is the development of new approaches to the regulation of mass communication, one of which can be considered fact-checking.
