The article examines the author’s hypothesis about the use of santai ceramics in the “magnificent” burials of the Tang era in China in connection with the very nature of ceramics, and not just their decor or symbolism. The influence of Buddhist and Taoist ideas during the Tang period leads to strengthening of the interpretation of life and death as an integral process that does not have internal oppositions.
