This paper describes an improved technique for cleaning fish scales. A high‐frequency sonic‐wave jewelry cleaner was used in combination with pancreatin to remove mucus and other foreign substances from the surface of scales. The proportion of scales usable for image analysis was significantly greater than that obtained with other cleaning methods. Precision and accuracy of digitized scale‐image measurements are enhanced when scales cleaned according to this technique are used.
