Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha in spawning condition were captured with gill nets on a spawning shoal historically used by lake trout Salvelinus namaycush in the North Channel of Lake Huron. Divers located numerous Chinook salmon eggs and counted 16 redds in an area 4 m by 20 m. Advanced eyed eggs were pumped from the shoal in early spring and hatched in 3 d at a water temperature of 10°C. The management implications include a greatly increased potential for natural reproduction by Chinook salmon and the possibility of negative interactions between Chinook salmon and lake trout on spawning shoals.
