Active management of fishery resources is a persuasive concept, the implementation of which may hasten learning about stock‐recruitment relationships and benefit resource users through the maintenance of optimally sized, more stable stocks. The management of large stocks of river herring–alewife Alosa pseudoharengus and blueback herring Alosa aestivalis –returning to a hydroelectric dam on a large river demonstrated that implementation of active management may be difficult for economic and political reasons, amongst others.
