A tagged male school shark recaptured recently off southern Australia had been at liberty for the longest recorded period (35.4 years) for any species of tagged fish. The shark had been internally and externally tagged on 3 March 1951 and was recaptured 214 km from the release site on 15 August 1986. During this time the shark had grown 17 cm and had shed the external tag.
