The annual rate of loss of Carlin tags was estimated as part of a population evaluation of walleyes Stizostedion vitreum of Kabetogama Lake in Voyageurs National Park, Minnesota. An estimated annual tag loss rate of 24.2% was determined from 1,796 and 2,498 walleyes that were both tagged and fin‐clipped in 1984 and 1985, respectively. A correction for the observed tag loss rate increased the estimate of first‐year exploitation of age‐3 and older male walleyes by 27%, from approximately 0.19 to 0.24; increased the estimated survival rate from 0.35 to 0.44; and decreased the estimate of population size by approximately 8.5%. These results illustrate the importance of assessing tag loss when important population statistics are estimated through the use of external fish tags.
