Rodlet cells occur in both freshwater and marine teleost tissues. Some investigators believe rodlet cells to be parasitic, but others consider them to be endogenous. In either case, most investigators have reported few or no lesions associated with rodlet cells. However, a recent clinical submission of freshwater angelfish Pterophyllum scalare (Cichlidae) revealed large numbers of rodlet cells that were associated with lesions. Examination of moribund fish revealed lesions in the postorbital vessel and in the tissue of the head kidney, both areas being associated with large numbers of rodlet cells. Variable numbers of rodlet cells were also observed without associated lesions in numerous other tissues.
